help?what do u think?
i REALLY want a husky
ive looked up the breed alot of times so i know about exercise needs, grooming, shedding, possible health issues, training…that kinda stuff

ive wanted one since i was 8 and now im 14 and my mom wants to get me a new dog since we moved into a new house about a month ago
we both looked up good breeds for us
and weve decided on aussie, husky, cocker spaniel,or golden(im very active)

she wants me to get a husky but since it will be my dog for 12 or more years she is letting me pick as long as the breed is good for our family
she really likes huskies too,but they have a strong prey drive
and i have 2 cats…so yeah…we talked to some shelter people and they said it might be fine if raised with cats at a young age but my mom still doesnt want to get one if it might kill the cats…

by the way
i have a 1 year old nephew that lives with us (were waiting til he gets a older though to get another dog)
and a pitbull/lab mix

border collies might end up trying to herd him so thats a problem….

were probably going to end up with an aussie or golden
or a mixed breed with one of those(were getting one from a shleter)

if anyone has a husky or dog with strong prey drive
please tell me if its ok with cats

i have 3 cat and a dog. my dog is best friends with my cat and at times think she is a cat. you have to get the dog young and it will be ok with the cat but the think you do need to think about is if your cat will kill the pup. one of my cats hate my dog and if he could i bet the cat would tear him up! lol

i have 2 cocker spaniels and i love them! they are great family dogs and usually good with other animals… but u need to watch the nephew around spaniels bc he might do the hard petting which can get annoying to cocker spaniels…

If you raise your dog with rules about the cats he will know that the cats are family and not prey. If you adopt a grown dog it might come with bad habits and bad feeling about cats, so you will need to supervise anytime they are together. This isn’t really breed specific though, any dog could potentially harm cats if they aren’t trained properly.

If you get a puppy you can teach it whatever you want dogs don’t always act how people expect. Get a good "how to" book and go from there. I have a black mouth cur, they usualy love to track and hunt but you just have to teach them otherwise.

My friend adopted a greyhound when she already had a white cat. Her dog had chased white bunnies his whole life. After a few months of supervision they are loose together in the house all day. If the dog is outside too long the cat looks for him. They are buddies.

I think if it is raised with cats it will respect them as other pack members. Plus, most cats can take care of themselves. One hiss and most dogs are on their way.

In reference to the shedding issues, they make a brush called the FURminator, it is for dogs and cats. We have a great dane and beagle that are heavy shedders, we use it once a month on them and we don’t have a 1/4 of the hair we use to in our home. We can pet them without it falling off everywhere. It works great. At a pet store its like $50 but online I found it for about $16. You can check out a video of a long haired dog and the FURminator here.
